Many people have difficulty using affirmations and visualizations to achieve the results they desire. They may diligently repeat affirmations to themselves and visualize what they want on a regular basis, but their desired goal still eludes them. According to the movie ‘The Secret’ and other sources of information about the Law of Attraction, the things they want should be flowing into their lives easily. They may wonder what they are doing wrong and begin to lose faith in these strategies for manifesting what they want in their lives. The bottom line is that affirmations and visualizations can be wonderful tools for self-transformation once the negative resistance to them is released. Often, however, many people try to change their long-held negative beliefs by just repeating affirmations to themselves and envisioning what they want and it frequently doesn’t seem to work very well. Here is why.
YOUR HIDDEN NEGATIVE BELIEFS
When you have deep, long-standing negative beliefs within you, such as I am not good enough, when you say an affirmation like “I am good enough” out loud to yourself, there is a little voice inside of you that says… ‘Oh, No! You are not!’ You may feel this as a negative emotion that comes up within you as you say your affirmation. So, every time you affirm a more positive belief, the negative belief within you gets activated and cancels out the energy of the positive affirmation. In this way, stating the affirmation can just serve to reinforce the negative belief within you.
The same goes for visualizing what you want. Let’s say you want more money. You affirm and visualize yourself receiving an abundance of money coming into your life right now and you are able to generate some enthusiasm for this idea as you begin. But then, soon you begin to feel anxious and self-doubt creeping in. Negative thoughts like these begin to arise: ‘Where will I get the money? No one will pay me for what I want to do. It’s hard to make that much money. It takes lots of time and effort and skill and besides I am not good at anything…’ and on and on. OK. So, where is your focus really? On the fears and doubts rather than on what you really want. Since what you focus on is what you get more of, you end up just getting more of the same. You short-circuit the positive energy of envisioning what you want by your habitual negative thoughts and feelings.
YOU MUST CLEAR THE STATIC FIRST
Now, with lots and lots of repetition, you may slip past that negative voice occasionally and eventually succeed in changing this belief to a degree. However, I have found that using the simple, powerful factors of Emotional Intelligence, or EQ as it is often called in psychology, can help you successfully target these negative beliefs and feelings directly and clear them away so they no longer influence you. EQ will help you to look your negative beliefs and feelings squarely in the eye and bring yourself back to a feeling of well-being. Once your issue has been cleared, you’ll get a new sense of clarity and understanding and you’ll realize that the negative beliefs you have held on to for so long just are not true. When this happens, your own wisdom bubbles up and you realize that you actually are good enough, in every way – all part of your self-confidence, self-esteem, and self awareness.
In fact, you are perfect just the way you are. And this feeling is not just a mental rationalization to try and talk yourself into feeling better. Once you clear the negative belief, you know at a deeper level that the positive idea that has bubbled up from within you is really true.
THE IDEAL TIME FOR AFFIRMATIONS AND VISUALIZATION
As you clear the static of these negative feelings and beliefs, your consciousness is now ready to receive new, more positive ideas. This is the ideal time to introduce positive affirmations and visualization into the process. So, at the end of each round of EQ, this is when to affirm new, more uplifting beliefs that are in alignment with what you want to create in your life.
